I am trying to figure out what this is. And if it's a possible pet. My GF loves red.. hehe so I am puting together a vivarium for her and am trying to find some nice looking animals for it.

If this is something I can get as a pet, are there any nice pets that would go well with it? Thank you everyone.

i don't know, but what do you mean you are going to put some nice looking animals for it? just one species per tank and do some research before you get anything.

Let me clarify a little bit. Looking for some animals as in looking for a single species of animal that has a very nice look to it. Prefferable red in color being that is her favorite color. I have never had any amphibians before, but I am familiar with keeping 1 species per tank. I have been taking care of snakes for quite a long time. As for doing research on them that's what I'm trying to do on this red amphibian. I'm trying to find out more about it to see if it would be an apropriate animal to keep. First thing I need to do is find out what it is tho. Thank you!

sorry, didn't exactly get what you were trying to say. nice idea to make it red though, panther chameleons are sometimes a reddish color. found a good site, thought you might like to see.
lots of salamander newt pics (some are red)

Your animal is the eft stage of the eastern newt (Notophthalmus viridescens). He is a woodland-adapted animal (for now) but will eventually transform into a drab olive-and yellow aquatic adult (but he'll keep the red spots). This could happen in a month or five years from now, though. Keep in mind that many states do not permit wild-collection of animals without permits; contact your state fish and game agency for more info. Good luck!

Sorry, I didn't see that you question had already been answered; Ignore this post!

Looks like Notophthalmus viridescens viridescens.

Definately N.v.v. This species won't stay red. As a juvenile (Eft) it is red, but 2-7 years after morphing, it will become an aquatic, green adult (with red spots).

If you want red, try considering tomato frogs. Although some are a bright orange-ish color, they could be a nice specimen to work with. Other possibilities also include fire bellied newts, strawberry dart frogs, red eyed tree frogs, fire bellied toads, some albino axolotl's are a nice pinkish shade with bright red gills. You could do some research. good luck with uour choice, & dont forget to find info, coz some i listed arent very good starters, hehehe
