Russian breeding question

jgjulander Aug 01, 2006 01:21 AM

I recently purchased a male russian tortoise and after about a week in the outdoor pen he is ready to go. I have seen what looks like some actual breeding. Is breeding in the summertime like this productive? She is over 7 years old and has never been bred and he is at least 2-3 years and is also a first timer. It looks like I will need some more females, as he is a bit amorous. Any help is appreciated as this is my first go with tortois breeding.

Thanks,
Justin

I have one very aggressive male and 2 females. He's in the mood from March to October. The females have produced fertile eggs for 4 years. I've seen succesful mating all season long, but I have no idea which mating period is the one that works.

I do agree that it helps to have more than one female. I've laid out the pen with rocks and logs that provide places for the females to hide behind and get away from the male.
