question about educational program

imaturtlefan Aug 09, 2006 06:52 PM

Ok, I kind of fell into this. I took some of my reptiles and exotics to my kids classrooms this past school year. The teachers started talking, and got more teachers interested, they all want me to come back this year. I had a friend who used to charge to go to parties, school things, ect, but she ended up in circumstances that caused her to have to shut the business down and get rid of all her animals. Anyway, Im considering picking up where she left off. Im having a blast educating these kids, but I know if Im going to run this like a business I am going to need liability insurance. My friend didnt have it, because the lowest quote she had was $1000.00 a month, she did make everyone sign waivers though. Does anyone else out there have any experience with this? Anyone have reasonable rates for anything like this. I dont have any giant snakes or anything. The biggest thing Id have is maybe a blue tegu, and a tortoise. Its mostly smaller harmless animals, but I have many. I am very careful, I let the kids handle a few, some I just let them pet, and I make sure the kids are staying calm and such. Can anyone give me any advice? Sorry for the book, thanks in advance for any help. Its just amazing to see how few children have been exposed to any type of animal other than dog or cat, I think every child should have to opportunity to see this stuff.

1000 dollars a month is about what it'll run you to get your liability insurance. I knew a guy who did educational shows for a living and the costs were so expensive here so he ended up having to move. good luck.
