New redfoot baby ok?

Barbedwirecat Aug 26, 2006 07:33 AM

I'm just making sure this behavior is normal. 4" redfoot arrived here in wednesday. Eating fine. Mixed spring greens, I have to grow the rest of the diet. and Mixed tort hay. Had a mealyworm last night (I couldn't resist) I never see it drink, or even the water messed up like it has. Humidity 65-70, basking 96, ambient 75-80. I don't see it come out of the hide box much (which is VERY humid).
I know I should expect this but for how long? I'm worried about the tort getting dehydrated.

Also is eating the sphagnum moss ok? I have it in there to keep the humid up.

Also after eating last night he parked himself under the basking spot and didn't move, actually fell alseep right there. I found him there this morning. I decided about 5 min ago to put him IN the water dish and drank like no tomorrow....

I'm not quite sure this is right, I've seen other people state that their move around alot but mine seems just to sleep. Granted its only been 3 days and I might be paranoid....

You be a conerned new tort. owner, but let your tortoise get use to everything, hes been through a lot needs to warm up to his surrondings. Keep doing what your doing. You should try and raise the humidity to at least 80 percent, i know you said your hide is humid but over all should be a tad higher, also basking area is kinda hot, try a lowwer watt bulb, redfoots dont tend to bask, they just like it at around 80 degrees give or take all around.
