He looks like the animals I consider blue but he looks more pale. I have had 2 clutches that were almost all blue babies. They were a bit darker though.

Here's the only photo I can find right off.

Yes, I did keep a female and she is the capra I picture on my caresheet at www.froggieb.com/Reptiles/Teal021_043002.JPG.

She produced babies and here is a pic of her gravid. Even though she is dark you can still see some blue mixed in.

And here are some of the babies she produced:

Most of the babies were blueish and the ones that weren't were green. Here is a male from that clutch grown up.

Not quite what you would expect! But, he does sometimes turn a nice light olive with lots of yellow/gold! I kind of like the deep russet over olive too though.

Hello Marcia

She’s very nice and so are her babies, its unfortunate that you have witnessed the color lost.

Give me time to work with a few generations, I don’t think color lost is obligatory.
I am quit sure colors can be promoted easily. Color husbandry is the forgotten side of herpetoculture.

Jobi, I am sure that the colors don't have to be lost. With me there is not much of a forgotten side of herpetoculture however. I started working with these guys less than 8 years ago and everything I know I have learned from my dragons, books and talking to others who work with reptiles. I am the first to admit that I am still learning. So, I think I have too much yet to learn and not that much that I could have forgotten yet! ; )

And it seems that so much of this isn't something that I can find in books, or at least I haven't found it if it is. I get frustrated at the fact that the books that are always recommended for learning about MHDs are written in German. I am at such a disadvantage not being able to read those. I wonder why they are not translated into English well. I know you were telling Bonnie that Manthey's book in German doesn't have the ID errors that the English edition has. That really stinks! It would be nice if we could all be on the same page!

So, I watch the animals, I talk to others who have them, and I try to filter out what works best. That is the best I can do for now.

Of course I meant that coloration is an aspect often neglected by breeders, many don’t even know that we can work to enhance coloration with captives.

Also let me take this opportunity to express my tots about you and your work.

I enjoy everything about you, you commit to your animals and you are intelligent about it.

8 years is long enough to understand much more then the average keeper.

We are having fun talking about animals we love, nothing else matters.

Do you know about a. coronata, and a. nataliae?

I ask Manthey’s some photos but I guess he’s not hot on sharing .
Oh well we can’t all have a generous nature!

jobi Aug 30, 2006 01:28 AM

Manthey is surly a generous guy, but he is working on a new book and needs to keep his material.

froggieb Aug 30, 2006 02:42 PM

I have not seen or heard of a. coronata. I read about and saw photos of a. nataliae in Reptiles Magazine and on the internet. Beautiful!

I sure hope Manthey's new book is also published in English. If not I will have to call on my German friend in Kansas! ; )
