A few questions and an ID

waldo Sep 01, 2006 03:03 PM

I just picked up three HL today and I need an ID.
I also need to know about feeding,I know they need ants but with fall here and the cold temps there aren't many around. Will my HL be ok eating other bugs over the winter?

looks like at least 2 platyrhinos, and the other with it's face away....I can't tell whether that's a platy or not. Kinda looks like a cornutum or coronatum. Better pics please. Close up face shots not always very helpful for ID....where exactly did you "pick" these up?

Better do a whole lot of reading if you have three of them. I hope you have got lizard or at least reptile experience.

Start by reading the thread below this one for some information resources.

I got them from a local pet store, I'm in North Idaho. The company they came from is located in Lewiston Idaho.I'm going to email them tomorrow with many questions about where they come from as they are supposedly captive bred.
I do have reptile experiance, I currently have 3 bearded dragon and 1 crested gecko. In the past I have kept iguanas, egyptian sand geckos, leopard geckos, ball pythons and a few other small lizards.

OK, that's 3 P. platyrhinos. I see the one boy and I guess you're sure the other 2 are girls...I can't see the base of their tails.
They may be CB. Particularly if someone told you up from what the sex was. That means they may have known more than the average seller does. Most sold are WC though, and they sometimes lie about it. What's the name of the people/company that was supposed to be doing the breeding? If they are indeed a captive breeder of Horned Lizards, I'd like to have someone to recommend people to for that instead of the wild caught.

actually I'm the one who sexed them. My aunt has had HL for about three yeard now so I knew what to look for.
The company is sierrawestpetsupply.com and I don't think they bred them. Their sales guy just showed up this morning at the local pet stoe with a truck load of reptiles for sale, he was traveling around the state trying to sell them off. He told the store owner he could get her any reptile she wanted, he also had collards and western fence lizards.
Makes me wonder what kind of a company will travel around with that many animals and no heat for them. They also had no care sheets or scientific names. The pet store called me to ask about their care, the sales man had told her to keep the HL at 80* and never mentioned ants. All in all, I'm not impressed with how these HL came to the pet store.

Well I'm glad to hear that. You seem to have some experience and good sense about these things.
In my opinion, anybody that doesn't know latin so to speak when it comes to what animal they are selling, just can't be trusted. I mean how much could they really know about what they are selling you, huh?
That will often tell you what condition these animals were in before you got them.

My advise to you would be to call the pet store up and tell them not to buy the Horned Lizards off these indescriminate peddlers again. For one thing, the prey they eat is very specific and you can't get it at Petco or in just any old back yard. For another thing, they really don't usually survive well in captivity that easily. And lastly, this is one of the three big reasons that Horned Lizards are disappearing from the map. Indescriminate strip mining and peddling out of the back of a truck.
