Milking venomous snakes as a job?

drvinestein Sep 08, 2006 06:16 PM

Hello. I'd like to begin extracting venom from poisonous snakes to help cure people from poisonous bites. Is there any information out there on how I can get started doing this? Do I need to meet certain qualifications or are there any regulations that I need to follow? Thanks!

I could be very wrong but where are you from? I am told that the Rattle Snakes from my area are pretty much useless when it comes to extracting venom. You may try asking you local Emergency office where they get there suply from and contact that lab and ask them about it.

I could be wrong but I believe most anti-venom is now made through synthetic methods. Get a list of anti-venom suppliers from local hospitals and contact the anti-venom producers directly. Also try to get a list of venom suppliers. Milked venom still has other uses such as research. You will need permits and training in aseptic techniques etc. Most people are going to want to obtain their venom from certified labs or handlers. You will need to develop a professional relationship with your buyers. Another possibility is to be a subcontractor for another venom supplier.
