southern copperheads

derekmoynihan Sep 13, 2006 11:25 AM

Well I just got back from a 2 week vacation/snake hunting trip and I struck out on my target species (large Louisiana southern copperheads). I hunted 3 locales in La. and no copperheads were seen. Here are some southerns from Walker County, Tx that a friend of mine recently brought me from one of his trips. They are nice but adults average around 2' from that area. If anyone knows where to acquire southerns that attain a large adult size (close to 4') I would appreciate any tips. Thanks

because of this guy. I've had him for over 4 years and been looking that whole time for a female anywhere near as nice as he is with no luck at all. He's from SC and is huge. I've never measured him but he's easily 4 feet and probably a few inches over. He eats medium rats with no problems to give you an idea of his size.

That is a large, nice looking Copperhead.

I got him in April of '02 without even seeing a pic of him. When I opened the box, I was amazed. Traded him for just your average baby blood python. I'll never let him go. He has an awesome personality too. It's actually too bad he's venomous. If I could only find his female counterpart.

Ryan, That is a bad ass snake, but if I was in your shoes I would be out of luck not knowing exact locale because I only pair up locale snakes when it comes to copperheads. I know a few people who like to pair nice snake to nice snake regardless of locale and that is great, but not for me.

Copperheads are sexually dimorphic (at least through part of their range). I've looked at literally hundereds of wild caught copperheads from several different areas in Arkansas. I've seen a few really big males in the process. However, I can probably count the number of females over 3 ft on one hand.

Maybe we just have small Agkistrodon? Western cottonmouths are the smallest of the 3 subspecies, but I've wild collected cottonmouths that have given birth to healthy litters, with the female being 18-20 inches total length. What sizes do you people see Agkistrodon giving birth in the other states? I know I can find a lot of the info in the literature, but I'd like to see what people are currently finding...

Now that you mention it, I guess I've noticed that too. Just never actually noted it. I've had around 50 copperheads over the last 7 years or so and the females do always seem to be smaller than the males. Thanks for pointing that out. I might have never picked up on it myself. However, admitting it, I now feel slightly like a dumbass.

Most of the gravid leucostoma I find here in southern OK are in the 18-20" size range. I've never taken measurements on the neonates, but my gestalt-ometer tells me that the neos from this area are smaller than those I'm most familiar with from the upper TX coast, where most of the gravid leucostoma are in the 24-30" range. The adults from this area are definitely much "chunkier" than those from the coast.

In regard to contortrix, those from coastal Brazoria county, TX are relative dwarfs; I've found hundreds from that area, and 24" would be a monster! I can't honestly say that I've found one that large along the coast, though 30 or so miles inland, it becomes more the norm. Most adults are 14-18", which would probably rule out any sexual dimorphism that leaned toward larger males. Here are a couple of pics of ADULTS from that area:

This one was interesting, as it is the only copperhead I've seen that would gape as a threat measure.......when the camera neared, it would widen its gape, though not to the degree of a cottonmouth:

I have witnessed a leucostoma from San Antonio, Tx that was less than 2' give birth to 5 chunky little babies. The snake really surprised us all because she was a fairly slender wc animal.
