question about het x het & offspring

crocodile_king Sep 16, 2006 11:05 PM

when breeding albino hetero to albino hetero I understand that you will produce ....

25% albino, 50% albino hetero and 25% normal ... Correct?

When you breed a very rare and valuable species, one obviously wouldnt have any problem knowing which are albino, but with regards to the albino hetero's and the normals there is no way to tell which is which correct?

Ok, so lets the albino babies produced are worth $10,000.00 each, the hetero babies are worth say $3,500.00 each and the normal babies are worth say $300.00

How would you work that because if the hetero babies are worth $3,500.00 you wouldnt want to sell them for $300.00 .... and you wouldnt want to sell someone a normal baby for $3,500.00 thinking its a hetero

How do you work that out ????

The prices I quoted above are just examples, im just trying to figure out what the fair and correct way to sell these babies would be

Im looking into buying some rare albino hetero's for a breeding project, odds are that once I start producing babies I will hold back the albino's that i produce the first few years to build up a breeding group ... BUT ... im looking at spending BIG money to get the original albino hetero pair and I would like to try and at least sell the hetero and normal babies that are produced to try and get back some of the initial investment, I dont want to basicly give away the hetero's but I dont want to rip anyone off by sending them a normal by mistake thinking its a hetero

Im new to the whole morph thing so advise would be appreciated.

I don't know what any one else would do, but my advice is this.

In your example I would advertise the reptiles in question as 66% chance of het for albino. Wich is what they will be.

As for price, you should set it higher than that of a normal and lower than that of a 100% het. Given that anyone who is buying one of the 66% chance hets is taking a gamble the price should be less than half of the price of a 100% het. At least that is what I think.

I also think that you should be able to charge at least double the price of a norm.

In your example I would try to get at least $750 for them.

If any one out there has a different way to calculate prices I hope they let you know.

How you set your prices is, in the end, up to you.

Good luck in your breeding.

Also, you can determin if an individual is a het or not by breeding it to a known het or to an albino.

If any albinos are produced then you know for sure that the one in question is a het. Breeding a het to a het does not guarantee any albinos, each egg produced has a 25% chance of being albino. It is possible to breed two hets and not get any albinos, but if you get a large clutch you should have at least one.

You have better odds of producing albinos from the one in question if you breed it to an albino. If no albinos are produced then it is almost certain to be a norm, but by breeding to an albino at least you have produced 100% hets.

Hope I have helped.

Using your numbers IMO, look at statistically. you're 66% het babies for a 2.4 colony would statistically have 4 hets and 2 norms

4 x 3500 2 x 300 = 14,600
14,600 / 6 = 2433 "value per animal"

then I'd reduce the price by 50% as a "risk factor" to say 1200

Another way to get to the same ballpark number is 1/3 the price of a 100% het.

If it really is a "rare" morph, then you can commend even higher numbers as you'd be one of the few (or only) source.

If you were the "only source" I'd keep everything for a few years, build your breeder base and when you started selling, than you'd be the sole source for a few years. Corner the market!
