staticx Oct 01, 2006 09:31 PM

im thinking of getting a stinkpot musk turtle i need some help with the setup like, temp of water and air and basking spot, what kind of filter to get,how deep the water needs to be,how big the tank needs to be im thinkin of a 20 gallon for 1 hatchling for its whole life, what food to give it,also if it will adjust to eating diffrent food than its been eating at the place (turtlesale.com).if gravel is the only subtrate possible, they put a caresheet with the turtle but i dont know how that would help.last but not least life span.also if you have any info to add please do.sorry for the long freakin post.

A hatchling would be utterly lost in a 20gallon tank. I have two month-olds in a 2.5 gallon.

I keep the tank around 75 (it's in my 'warm herp' room). I feed them blackworms. These guys aren't really baskers. In the wild, they may go into the warm shallow pools on the sides of rivers, but they don't really come out to bask.

I will use sand when they get older, but when they're young, it's much easier to monitor eating and poop habits in a bare tank.

Life span is upwards of 50 years at least.

you should at least have a log or something sticking out of the water so he can get up and dry off then plop back into the water.

You could easily keep him in a shoe box until he grows a little. I have 3 in a 2 gallon tank and I feed them in smaller containers so they can't miss the food. I feed them reptomin, chopped minnows and small worms every other day. They grow pretty fast.
