Help Please - taking care of Salamander

themacduckies Oct 02, 2006 10:59 PM

Please help me! I am a substitute teacher who is in a classroom with several different critters, and trying to keep them all alive!!! My instructions were that the kids will know how to take care of all of the animals. . . . I am pretty sure that the turtle, tortoise, and fish have been overfed. I was in the classroom last week and found out today that I may be therefor another two weeks.

Anyway, the kids have been feeding the Salamander 3 -4 times a day. The Salamander is an adult and based on pictures I have found seems to be a barred tiger species.

My questions. . .
How much should he be fed? The classroom has a container of meal worms and small beetle type insects.

How often should they be fed?

What should I know to make sure that he survies??? ( The teacher is out on emergency leave because her son was in an accident and has since died. As a result, it is even more important that all of her animals are healthy when she returns.)

Thank You so much for your help!!!!!

All your critters should only be fed once a day. The salamanders probably 2 or three mealworms OR beetles a day. The turtle and tortoise depending on size about a handful of greens.
The fish just a slight sprinkle per fish.
Fish will eat however much you give them and can be overfed. The rest usually only eat what they need, but there can be exceptions so you keep it at an average just in case. They should manage fine if you do that, and they will all be healthy and happy when the primary teacher returns.
Best of luck!!!

Adult tigers should only be fed 2-3 times per week if housed at at usual room temperatures - they have a high potential for obesity. Please refer to the link for proper care and feeding.
