Fire Belly newts and toads?

dx371 Oct 06, 2006 12:34 AM

Ok I wanna get some chinese fire belly newts (The smaller kind) I was told that mixing them with the fire belly toad shouldnt be a problem at all? just wanna see your veiws on this....would I be better with mixing the FBTs with the bigger fire belly newts (from Japan) or should I just not mix them at all and keep it to strictly fire belly newts?

I have tried this and found that the toads tend to eat the newts eventually. The toads eat just about anything that moves it seems so i wouldnt mix the 2.

i have a tank setup now with six fbt , one japanese fbn and one chinese fbn and have never had a problem. more often than not the newts will bite the toads feet on accident when trying to get some food, but that doesn't effect either one. if you do your setup properly and keep your amphibs fed and healthy then you should no problems. i also woulkd like to know how big the of a firebely toad the other person has that it ate a fiebelly newt, even the chinses are not that small unless you get a baby.

the toad was considerably large for FBT and it more bite the newt then ate it but the newt did not survive the attack

I'm not sure about FBN's and FBT's, but I have a paddletail newt (Looks like a Japanese but the tail is vertical and looks like a paddle) in with 2 bullfrogs right now, but eventually I WILL have to seperate them when the frogs get bigger. If a frog can fit it in it's mouth it will eat it!!! It's that simple. Right now the newt is too big for them to eat, but they ate a smaller bullfrog that was in there with them. Right now the newt likes to swim under them when they're floating and goose them to make them jump, then it will go to where they jumped to and do it again. It's actually funny, but they WILL have to be seperated eventually.

yeah, don't do that, fire belly toads produce toxins that will most likely kill the newts.
