Confused New Cherry Head coming

pgross8245 Oct 06, 2006 08:20 AM

I am picking up a new 4 month old cherry head tomorrow. I have read so many articles about their inside housing and lighting/vitamin supplements, that I am confused as to which is the best choice.
I have a 40 breeder set up with damp forest bed and am getting spagnum moss today to put on top. I am using a 100 watt Powersun on the one end and the high temp is reading 95, right under the light, the mid temps in the 80s and the far end around 72. I have a ceramic cave on the cool end and a half log in the middle. Water dish on the cool end.
My question is about the using/not using the uv lights. I have read some articles that say they don't need it and others that say they do. I am also confused about the vitamins/calcium. I also keep uros, a beardie and monitors. I have been using the repcal calcium and herptive for years and my animals are all very healthy. Some articles on the red foot only propose to use straight calcium carbonate, nothing else. I make a large salad for my lizards and sparingly sprinkle both calcium and vitamins every time I make it. I only use a very small amount for a lot of salad. All my lizards have done well with this over the years I have had them. Should I be making a separate bowl for the tort with only calcium? I want to make sure I am providing the best care for this little one. Any suggestions? Thank you.

Torts DO need UV lighting. Generally for baby torts adding calcium daily is a good idea. Most people use calcium with D3 for indoor torts, and only plain calcium for outdoor torts. Multivitamins can be used once or twice a week.

Thanks for your response. There were so many contradictory articles/caresheets I read. I have both Minerall I indoor and I also have repcal calcium with D3 and herptivite, so either will work. The little one ate right away today, so I am pleased.
