Behavior Questions

jeneef Oct 07, 2006 12:59 PM

My Pat is about a year old now and has been exitibing some really strange behavior lately and I was hoping that someone could give me advice.

About 2 months ago I moved Pat from our living room into the room we keep all of our lizards in. I chose to do this because he was showing some signs of anxiety, unfortunately these have not gone away since the move, the only thing I seemed to accomplish was to get him to stop eating regularly.

As a baby Pat was very tame and never frilled out unless he was hot under the light. In about the past 3 months he has started getting very upset any time you go to touch him or pull him out of his cage. The least he will do is frill out, there have been instances where he has lunged at myself or my husband when trying to feed or pull him out.

I took him to the vet, got a clean bill of health except for parasites, which they need a stool sample for. Unfortunately I am not able to find any droppings in his cage at all, even after he has eaten a cricket or been hand fed by us.

I am wondering if these could be related? Is he acting up because he doesn't feel well? Is the aggressiveness normal when they start getting a little older?

Thanks for taking the time to read this and help.

from what i have read frill dragons need to be in a room or area where they cannot see any other lizards. this stresses them out and they get temperamental. it seems like this is what is happening with yours. maybe the reason he/she wasnt doing well to begin with is the parasites. i think you should put him/her back to where he/she was before. (cant rem. gender) by moving him to the room with your other lizards you might be adding stress to the parasitic infection. try giving him a treat with tweezers so he warms up to you again and sees you mean no harm. good luck.

Thanks, but you didn't actually read my post in full, or maybe I didn't write the details clearly enough.
First, I know enough to keep him from seeing the other lizards, I'm an experienced herp keeper. Especially since my other lizards (chameleons) are even more sensitive to the sight of another lizard than my Frilly Pat.
Second, I never said he had parasites, I said that was the only thing we were unable to test for at his most recent vet appointment. The cloacal wash the vet did was clean, but he wanted a stool sample to be sure since not much came out in the wash.

**A BIG thanks to Mizzy who told me that the agression could be happening due to the fact that we added a mister to Pat's cage, he may think it's mating season with the change in "weather"**

Reagardless, he eats sporatically, isn't losing weight, and hopefully he will calm down a little more soon.

Thank you anyways for your advice, I really appreciate it.
