Hey, I run a small herp rescue in Central CA and have now become big enough to be looking at attaining non profit status. Can anyone point me in the right direction as to how I go about doing this?? Any advice is greatly appreciated.
Cheers,
Kat

THere are books in the library on how to incorporate as a NON-STOCK corporation. This costs approx $75 and is sent to the state. Then request an EIN number of employeers from the IRS. This will be your ID number whether or not you have employees.
THen for $150, you may file for an advance ruling as a non-profit. WE did it without a lawyer. Problem is that you MUST get donations.

Order a copy of the IRS non profit instructions before you do the articles of incorporation. There are some paragraphs for 501C3s that must be included in the articles to become a 501c3. ALso there is a paragraph that deals with the assets when the corporation is dissolved. This also is in the instructions for the IRS non profit form 1023.
