Panacur, is anything else needed?

EMWhite Oct 16, 2006 11:32 PM

Helo all, (I'm kind of directing this towards Marcia)
Whenever I acquire a new horned lizard, I always treat it/them with three rounds of Fenbendazole (panacur). Once, then again in two weeks and then again in three. I don't bother to get fecals done at this point because I realize that they all have some sort of parasitic infection. Now for the question, has anyone ever used anything in concert with panacur when treating these lizards? Like Flagyl etc.? I'm just asking because I've never had any problems with panacur not effectivly treating my lizards so far, and I'm just curious to see if anyone else has. Thanks for any input.

I was under the impression that Baytril or Flagyl are antibiotics, rather than a treatment to rid them of worms. I always wipe a thin layer of olive oil on my newbies to drown any mites they might have, over a period of a few days and followed by a bath to rinse the remaining grease/dead mites off them.

My first pair of capra were treated with both panacur and flagyl. I don't remember all that was found but one of them didn't make it.

I found this about flagyl

Right, flagyl is used to treat protozoa. I had a kitten that had Giardia. It isn't that common and the vet treated her for almost a year for different infections and different things before we found a tapeworm crawling down my jeans when I was petting her one day and then she sent off a stool to the SDU and finally found that she had Giardia too.

I will say that my first group of MHDs had both worms and protozoa but none of the ones I have had tested in the last 5 years have had anything but worms so I don't know what to say on the flagyl.

I guess this is why I pay for the fecal. I feel that the meds are too hard on these small animals to be meding them if they don't need it! You're giving them poison and I just can't see doing that if they aren't carrying parasites!

froggieB,
Have you ever encountered a horned lizard who has not been infected with parasites? Is that even possible? I thought it was a given that all wild caught lizards etc. would have some parasite burden. I don't mean for this to sound rude, and I understand where you are coming from.

Not really, but I still send in a fecal in hopes!

I Once got a HMD that was parasite free
Tripod
remember him Marcia?
he was the best HMD I ever had, but I got him from a responsibel HMD owner wo got him frm a responsible HMD owner
if you do not KNOW they are well cared for, chances are they need Tx
maybe in 20 years we will have enough HMD breeders to have a good clean brreding base to get clean pets like about 40% of the Geckos out there
