Help needed with toad I.D. please!

davemangham Oct 18, 2006 10:24 AM

Can anyone help with an i.d. on this toad?

Photo was taken in a Safari camp on the banks of the Talek river in the Masai Mara game reserve in Kenya.

I can't seem to find enough detailed descriptive info on the web to enable a positive i.d.

Thanks in advance.

Dave

Lee,

Thanks for the attempt at an i.d.

Unfortunately, to my knowledge 'Fowler's Toad' (Bufo fowleri) is a species of the North American Atlantic coastal area, whereas my photo was taken in Western East Africa.

If it's a 'Fowler's' then it's an awfully long way from home!

I've had a tentative i.d. of Bufo maculatus, the 'Flat-backed Toad' from Bob Drewes, an expert on herptiles of East Africa, but this is based purely on the photo location, as the call is very important in identification of many similar looking African toads.

But again, thanks for the try!

Dave
