Which amphibians to house with fish?

cheshire_catfish Oct 18, 2006 01:23 PM

I recently bought a 50 gallon aquarium that has a second level built into it about halfway up. The idea is to have water in the bottom and a terrestrial area on top, with an aquarium filter creating a waterfall in between. I have some killifish I'd like to keep in the bottom (they're about 2"-3" fish, very fast).

Can you recommend any interesting amphibian species that might do well in this display? (and not eat my Killies) I can build a bridge from the land to the water, or not, as appropriate.

i can't think of any frog that wouldn't drown in water above 6 in. they are actually very bad swimmers, and they ones that do swim ok will eat the fish. you might try a non-toxic newt, they can often go in deep water without any trouble, if you do this i would suggest having a piece of driftwood or floating plant in the water part so it can be partially submerged and rest.

I have dwarf african frogs that do well with my fish and have been in water up to like 18 inches or so with out much problems. They dont require land though since they are totally aquatic. But id say get a none toxic newt if you want something that might use the land as well as the water.

I'd definitely recommend african dwarf frogs. I've only kept them in aquariums, and have never seen them fight with the fish for any reason. Provided your fish are fast enough, you could also try a fiddler crab. Beware, however, that crabs may try to catch slower fish, but this could be alleviated with daily sinking pellets and meaty foods.
