Here are some shots of the new persians I recieved earlier this week. These are of the female, the male is in shed. Both are black phase, I now have 1.1 black and 0.1 red phase persians.

Very nice looking rats. I've been interested in them for a while. What's their seasonal eating behavior like? Do they tend to go off feed in the late summer/early fall?

Well, I haven't had them very long, so I'm not totally sure. I've heard hatchlings sometimes require brumation before they start feeding. I certainly hope to keep mine feeding through the winter. They like it cool, and my house should be about the right temp for them in the winter.

OK.

I thought maybe the red one had been with you awhile. Well even with the cold weather species it's usually reasonable to keep cb hatchlings, yearlings and two year olds going over the winter. After that I've found that it starts to get harder.

I'm working with longissima and that's recently been placed along with persica, situla and hohenackeri in a new genus Zamenis. So I was curious if they exhibited similar captive behavior. I'll check back with you in a couple of years to see if they get picky in the fall.

Regards
John

Cool looking snake. If I remember correctly, persica used to part of longissima, but were upgraded to full species status no too long ago. My red persian came in July of this year, and is the same age as the black pair but much larger. I hope to get the trio breeding in 08. Not too many red animals available these days, and since the blacks are het piebald, my red offspring shall be 50% hets. I've already developed some interest in piebald breeders to make the first red pied.

Good luck with that piebald project. That should be very exciting. Seib had some nice photos on his site. I liked the look of those animals.

Best regards

Hi, John. I kept and bred Persians for a few years back around 2000. I would say they are similar to longissima and situla in requirements. Once started they should do pretty well, but may start brumation slightly earlier than situla. I think I brumated my adults around four months. Interesting snakes if you like longissima, helena, and the like. You could keep them in a 70-82*F. regime, maybe with an undercage heat pad for digestion.

Good luck, all....TC

Congrats on your new Persians - she is beautiful, so shiny and alert looking. How are they settling in? Has the male shed now?

metalpest Oct 29, 2006 11:07 AM

Male has shed, I'm going to feed all of them later today. Female already ate once. They seem a little calmer than my red.

Thanks for the compliments!
