The Toad Choice: American or Fowler's

CJBianco Oct 22, 2006 10:48 AM

I am interested in adding a toad to the family, and I am looking for advice on the captivity differences between the two species. (For instance, is one a stronger feeder or less prone to stress?)

Any advice is appreciated.

Thank you.

american toads have a greater range and are much more common. they would be easier to find and cheaper if you bought one, i think their care is pretty much the same, but fowlers probally like it warmer cause they only live in the south. i would get the fowlers cause the males have an awsome call, it sounds like a sheep whaling.

Thank you for the quick reply.

Actually, I live about ten miles southeast of the recorded range for the American Toad. (No big deal, but the Fowler's is a lot more common in the area.)

I prefer the soft song of the American, but the Fowler's is a little prettier (IMHO).

And it's a wash on the size.

So I am still debating...and waiting on some wise toadaphile to enlighten me with a final consideration.

(Oh! why didn't I fall in love with toads before one month ago; I spied a nice plump female on the short walk home from the library one warm drizzling evening? Now I must wait until the next Spring! Oh! torturous seasons! Oh! hard-hearted weather!)

Thank you again.

I read online that the American Toad uses its tongue to catch prey, unlike most true toad species [which might include the Fowler's though not specifically mentioned] that pounce on prey.

Is this true? (How does the Fowler's Toad catch prey?)

Fowler's use their tongue to catch prey. :0)

yeah, i agree, fowlers are pretier. you could always get both, keep them in the same tank cause their habitats are the same. just a thought... if you do get one i would get a baby, that way it wouln't be as stressed because it doesn't know anything better than a tank, but adults will want to go back to the wild. trust me, my whites got out and now he never stops trying.

I am going with the European Green Toad (B. viridis) -- the best of both worlds! LOL

Thank you again for the help. =)
