Corn Snake breeding questions, w/ Pics

jswanson737 Oct 25, 2006 10:17 AM

I have been anticipating breeding a couple females this year... they are now plenty big enough, but I didn't find the male creamsicle like I was hoping, so I am facing waiting until next year or using a couple of my other males.

The first two are the female creamsicles, and below that are two of my males, snow and hypo motley, I would like to maximize the white in the first female, and the other creamsicle, I have no big expectations... any opinions? Wait? Snow with the white cream?

Also, I have heard about sperm retention in females, could they retain sperm from this years breeding and use next year if I use a different male?

Thanks for the opinions...

I think you would be defeating your aim to maximize white if you use the first male. Without knowing what sort of stock the snow came from, I'd just be guessing about the creamsicles he'd sire.

Bottom line: I'd wait for the sort of male you want. Your mileage may vary.

You may want to wait as Paul sugests, but it comes to mind that if you find a male that is what you want it may be too young to breed at the time you get it.

If you find your male as an adult, great for you. If not it could be a year before he is ready. In that case I would breed your girls to the snow. Even if you don't get the result you are looking for the babys should be good lookers. The snakes you have are all beautiful (but I think that pretty much all snakes are).

I don't know what your experience level is with breeding snakes, so you could also consider it a practice run, to prove the snakes as fertile, and to give you experience in incubating eggs. That is if you have not bread these snakes before or other snakes.

In the end it is up to you.
Best of luck and lots of cute babys,
AR

Thanks for the replies, I was looking at a nice male cream, might be a little small for this year, haven't purchased him yet either, so I am thinking next year I will have a male cream... both of my males shown are proven, they have produced a couple nice clutches for me so far... I am curious to know about sperm retention, I don't want to alter next years male cream... I guess that is where I am having a tough time.
