Most of the stuff I have seen about it has been good, with the exception of a lousy kit lens (something that Canon seems to be getting famous for!). The Sigma 17-70 DC Macro lens is supposedly a better replacement.
If you already have some decent lenses, it seems like a good upgrade path. And Canon has finally created an entry level camera with a decent LCD screen on the back!
There is a pretty thorough review here - www.dpreview.com/reviews/canoneos400d/
If you go to the last page of the review, Phil summarizes his pros and cons.
You might also read some of the posting on their forum to see what (if any) problems people are having.

Thanks Chris,
I had another guy tell me that the lens in the package deal wasn't worth having. I'm thinking of just picking up the camera body and then adding another lens or two down the road. I'm lucky to have a friend that is a pro photographer, so I let him test out the lens and give me a trustworthy review. Only problem is he is in Africa for another 6 weeks, so I can't bug him with my questions.
Take Care and thanks again
Excuse me for being a bit late on this, but I just picked up an XTi on Saturday, and it's working out pretty well. Albeit the kit lens IS a little crappy, it still works, and I got the whole set-up online for 700$, new. Here are a few pictures with my 100mm macro.

I didn't set up or anything, I got home late and decided to give it a tester. Those pictures are through glass. It's turning out way better than my PowerShot A510.
