whats wrong with the new fire belly??

budlightsnoopy Nov 12, 2006 10:12 AM

I purchased 2 firebelly newts for my son on Friday and the larger of the two while in the water will keep its mouth open and has what appears to be a cloudy "ball" that prohibits it from closing its mouth. While basking on the log however, it seems to be able to close its mouth. Any idea if this is normal, i'm thinking its not since the other doesnt do this. I would dare say that there is something wrong with it and i dont think eating is a possibility in this condition. Any help would be appreciated in treating this. thanks

Were they both "normal" looking when you bought them? If so then I am betting that it is a piece of shed skin that is stuck on its mouth by the way that you explained it. They normally eat this. If it isn't coming off by itself then you can pull it off by hand.

I agree it sounds like possible skin that hasn't shed yet. When in the water the water would cause it to 'float' so it's visible, but while out of the water it would drain and not be seen. If so can be helped off by gently pulling on it.

Hope that's it, it would be an easy fix.
