hi, i was wondering how many people have had or seen tame tokays?? I was at a show in Rhode island a long time ago and there was a guy that had a completely tame tokay. He said he breeds them grows them up and handles them 15 minutes a day until they are pretty much tamed down and then just once a week or so. Has anyone heard of this?? Where can I find baby tokays and does this system sound reliable?? I know from seeing and holding his that its possible, but does anyone elese have info?? Thanx!!

I've heard of success in taming tokays with the same method.

15 minutes a day, every day. It works. I'm working on it with my adult veiled chameleon male, with slow progress. I'm also starting with my jeuvi basilisks, they're naturally a very flighty lizard so it's taking a bit longer with them.

...Some people will advise against it because of stress, but if you factor in the fact that you'll be causing them 15 minutes of stress every day for a few weeks or months..comparing that to 2-5 minutes of stress during feeding and cleaning and maintenance over their lifetime, it weighs itself out to be worth it.

Short term > long term.

cool, thanx for the info. Tokays are my favorite gecko....next to the giant new calidonians (spelling??). Now I just have to find some hatchling babies. What time of year do they usually hatch??

Tokays are by nom means domesticated.
Even a fith generation cb calico tokays still does not differ from his wc cousins with repsct to behaviour.
These lizards are secret creatures and regular handling imposes nothing but stress to them.
They are not able by nature to "make friends" with humans and will never like to interact with them.
After a while of regular handling they may kind of give up, but even if you do not recognize it, any handling will continue to be stressful and will significantly shorten their life.
Why handle them at all?
Tokays are beautiful lizards which display fascinating behaviour.
They develop personal bonding to their mate, guard eggs and Babies and have a beautiful appearance. A cb Tokay will learn that the presence of its owner and even the cleaning work in the tank is harmelss and after a time won´t freak out upon that.
It will defend itself, if someone tries to grab it or comes too close to its eggs or babies.
But in general, tokays are among the least agressiv gecko species at all if accepted as what they are.
Thats how tokays are and nobody can change that. Do not try to handle these lizards. Its of absolutely no benefit fro them.

best regards

ingo

P.S. Tokays hatch year round.

well the impression i got wasnt that he/she wanted to completely tame them.. just get them used to a person being close to them.. and actualy just so you know.. my adult female is completely tame.. i bought her tame from a petstore.. and no she doesnt have parasites... anyway.. she acts the same way out of the tank on my arm as she does in the tank.. no color variation/ heavy breathing.. mostly she will just relax on my shirt

That is an interesting approach, and I know that I am concerned for my geckos health when they are handled.

How do you get your tokay out of the cage to do a complete clean of the enclosure?

I wish you could tell my tokay that. She deliberately JUMPS on me and sticks on me and refuses to let go. She turns a very very pretty colors when she's on me and likes to play silly games like jump on my shoulder. Then I put her back on my hands she jumps back.

I really DON'T WANT to hold mine because I have entirely too many other lizards that want my attention all the time, but she will jump on me and actually will not eat unless I give her some attention.

I think this tokay bonded with me. She (or he) never attempted to bite me and, well, to be honest, I wish she were more antisocial. Like I said all of my reptiles want attention so this is another one that likes attention.

And she does turn dark when I ignore her. Pretty colors again when I hold her. Odd, isn't it.

At a reptile place here in Ontario, they had tame CB adults.. One of the keepers said they handle them and use them for shows and that seems to work.

Rich at PET'acular EXOTICS has a tame tokay, Cool gecko. IT will just sit on your shoulder like a crested. Daily handling and a willingness to get bit, can take a year or more but it is worth it for such a pretty gecko.

My Tokay is so tame she's actually a pain at times. She DELIBERATELY jumps on me when I try to feed her and REFUSES to let go. She has these wierd feeling feet too that can stick on me big time. I have a very hard time getting her back in the tank because she wants to stay on me.
