Hibernation question

drrok Nov 16, 2006 04:18 PM

I have taken care of reptiles for years, but this is the first time I have ever attemted to hiberante any of them. About a week ago I turned off all my lights for my two DHLs after following the instructions given on Phrynosoma.org for preparing HLs for hibernation. The temperature in my tank is now around 55 degrees. The problem I have is that one of the HLs never borrowed under the sand and is just laying on top of the sand while the other just has its head poked out. Is this okay? Should I be concerned?

Also, if at any point later in hibernation they should emerge, should I offer them water?

I think that is it, thanks for your help.

It's difficult to give you advice without knowing more about your situation. How large is your tank? How warm in the daytime, how cool at night? What is the substrata? Did you slowly take the daylight time down?
You have your lights off completely now?

If you can provide a few more answers there are folks here than can give you some advice.
Thanks

the tank is a 40 gallon breeder with about five inches of sand in the bottom. It has been pretty warm here in Idaho thus far, so the temp in my cage ranges from about 50 to 60 degrees or so.
I did slowly take the lights off by using different timers on both the UVB lights and the heat light. Now, I have been leaving the lights completely off.
