water youngins not eating

rhyion Nov 16, 2006 05:11 PM

I have 2 month old northerns. The past few weeks they have eaten fish nearly everyday and seemed very hungry. The past 4 days they haven't even aknowldeged the fish are there. Is this a problem? I would say maybe they could be shedding soon, but their eyes are not cloudy or anything. I havn't done anything different with the temperature either. Any help would be much apreciated.

Thanks

haha, thats kinda funny i just got over that problem, sorry i didnt mean to laugh.

dont worry about it that much, mine went off feed for almost 3 weeks. try earth worms.

I always trying to feed him rosyies he ate one the first time and then never again then, i tried a fat head minow from a bait shop and he ate it, now he is eating rosyies again. they might want a verity in their diet so try the earth worms. i wouldnt worry all that much right now

they can be getting ready to shed, most water snakes shed when they are first born, 1st month after, second month, then every 2 months....my ribbons wont eat even if their eyes dont cloud for a few days.

good luck keep us posted

good news, for some reason, they were themselvs again today and each dominated like 3 tuffies each. Idk, maybe they were just not hungry for a couple days, or stressed, but they seem fine again, even had some food fights with eachother but they did't hurt eachother. I've tried tadpoles and earthworms and they did't work for some reason. It might have been because they wern't that hungry, I'm not positive. I put a fish on a pinky once and tricked them into trying to eat it, but it was too big. I'll try that technique again in a month or so. Are pinkies nutricious for them if you feed them to waters every now and then?

yea they are good for them, just dont feed them rodents with hair. i read somewhere that their stomaches cant digest hair?? i dont know it sounds like it could be right

interesting. im no expert, and ill take your word for it for now, but i would guess if a snake can digest bones of an animal it could digest hair, but idk, i could be wrong.

I don't know about water snakes, but a lot of vipers seem to have trouble digesting hair (it's much tougher to digest than bone). But, it doesn't seem to cause a problem. It just passes through along with anything else that's indigestable. I think I remember seeing undigested fish scales being passed by my waters, so I wouldn't worry too much about a little hair.
