Pac man frog substrate

ajd Nov 20, 2006 09:22 AM

What is the best cage setup and substrate for a pac man frog? Also for a 2 in frog how often shoud you feed it?

I have done lots of research but I would like to get the opinions of others.

Thank you
AJ

coco bedding is wat i use, i use a entire brick per 10 gallon tank. and if you keep two make sure you keep them well fed, everyday feed them would be my opinion.

I think they meant they have a 2 inch frog, not 2 frogs. I also use the brick of coconut bedding which I keep moist by spraying every day or every few days. I would avoid peat moss as it contains twigs which can become ingested (this has happened to me, I dissected the frog after it died). Also, peat moss is acidic, way too acidic for frogs in my opinion. As for feeding, I would feed a growing frog almost as much as it wants to eat. 2-3 crickets or even more everyday. As it becomes and adult you should only feed it a few crickets 2 times a week or so. What is more important than anything with growing horned frogs is that you dust the crickets with calcium and vitamin supplement at least once or twice a week.

AJ,
I would use the coconut bedding. It is safe and passes easily through the digestive system without causing problems if it happens to be ingested. As the frog matures you could mix in some sand (play sand works fine, and for sand you don't have to wait until it's an adult, you can mix it in now if you like),you can also mix in some orchid bark. I rinse the bark I use, it is incredibly dusty when new. This gives the substrate a more natural look, and the sand makes it "fluffier." This makes burrowing easier for your frog. You can also cover the ground with green moss, wet it it first and then spread it about in clumps, it looks good and aids the humidity. Good luck!
