How much for the turtles?

kaysie Nov 20, 2006 12:44 PM

I took my two little 4 month old common musks to the Novi Pet Expo this weekend. I was asked at least a hundred times if they were for sale, and some guy offered me $50 for them. No matter how many times I explained to him that they weren't for sale, he kept coming back and offering money. I couldn't sell my cute little fellas!

I know how you feel about that. I can't sell mine either. I didn't buy them (various species) to begin with because they needed rescuing but ya know once they are part of the family.. then they are part of the family. Not for sale!

btw do you have any photos of them? I can imagine how adorable they must be at that age.
I'd love to see them.

Not right off hand, but I'll work on that today. They're REALLY cute.

That sure is a lot of money to offer for such a common species.
But then, if you lived in Japan or Germany you would pay much more than that. I know I would pay $100.00 for a hatchling stinkpot if I lived in Europe or some other country where I couldn't catch my own or easily get a c/b one.
And for the record, I wouldn't take $1000.00 for my ugly little male cherryhead redfoot. We have had him for too long and he is just too cool!

Actually, if it was $50 for both, that's not a bad price. $25 for head-started, healthy, captive bred turtles of a species that makes a good pet that doesn't get too big? Not bad at all.

Here's some pics of the cute little guys. I got them in mid-September, and was told they were about a month old. So they're around 3-4 months old now. And growing like weeds! I believe they're 2 males. I named them Lewis and Clark lol.

I keep 2 in a 2.5 gal with a floating plastic log thing. They rarely climb out. As you can see from the scutes, they're growing very fast! I've cut them back on food a little bit to slow them down.

The colors and 'beauty' of the mud and musk turtles is highly subjective. But the colors of many hatchlings are undeniably nice.
The plastron of the one pictured is quite attractive. Plus, the growth is perfect even though fast. Nice work.
I just read somewhere that the age of the common musk turtle can easily exceed 50 years. Those look like they have a great start on it.
