Hibernation?

killr_silhouette Nov 21, 2006 07:50 PM

okay...so... is it better to let a Tegu hibernate, not hibernate?...or does it really matter?

I've read a few things...and they basically say that it is beneficial for breeding purposes...but i'm not planning on breeding...

I do however, want to do some educational shows, and if my tegu is in hibernation from september to april, that could potentially conflict...although, if it is best for her, then she can hibernate all she wants...

My animals welfare is my # 1 priority, much more important than a show, or anything of the sort.

thanks for your input in advance!

Let her do what she wants to do. If she wants to hibernate she will, even if you keep the cage warm. Not a good idea to disturb them once they go down since hibernation brings about a very slow metabolism and very little bodily functions, not just sleep. Tegus know what they're doing.

Once I see mine go down and stay doen I'll lower the cage temps to mid 70s and that's it. Keep fresh water available just in case she comes out for a look.
