Corkbarks: keeping males together?

mphelps Nov 23, 2006 01:09 PM

To those who are keeping U. pietschammi--

I have an adult pair (M/F) of corkbarks in a large, well-planted cage. The cage is 36"Hx20"Wx20"D. A few months ago I bought a second immature pair. This second pair is housed separately in a vivarium that is too small for them now that they are attaining adult size. I am thinking about putting the two pairs together in the large cage.

First, does anyone have experience housing males of this species together? Have you seen much male/male aggression?

Second, is anyone out there housing multiple pairs together in a large cage? How do they do in community?

And by the way, the large pair has provided two clutches of two eggs each so far. Fingers-crossed on getting some nice baby corkbarks.

Thanks,
Mike

i housed two pairs of corkbarks together for a while. at first there was a little aggression, mainly from the male that i had for a longer time, plus he was established in the cage i used for the pairs, so he kinda felt it was his territory. for the first month or so, he would give the other male a run around the tank, but nothing serious ever came of it. the females even seemed more receptive having two males around, although i never got any fertile eggs.

Thanks for your reply. I will try placing the two pairs together and see what happens.

I placed two male U. henkeli together once and there was immediate, very aggressive fireworks. But my cage is big enough that hopefully the two male U. pietschammi will be able to negotiate personal space and then avoid each other.

We'll see.

Thanks,
Mike

I have three male pietschmanni together right now. Two brothers and their father. They seem to get along perfectly fine. I have actually seen much more aggression between females than males.
