Asian Black Leaf Turtle???

SRX Nov 25, 2006 09:16 AM

Is there such a common name for a true satin black, leaf-type turtle? I do not have any photos and after searching through Google, cannot locate a photo similar to the animals I ran across. Their were recently a few at an expo and I was wondering what their latin name is?
Any photos or links would be deeply appreciated.
Thank you for your time,
Scott

You may find this link helpful. You can also click on the Asian Leaf Turtle link in blue near the top of the page for a detailed description.

Thank you for the link. The turtles I saw looked very similar to the photo on the bottom left of the link, except for one difference; they were entirely black all over, carapace, plastron, and skin; almost an entirely melanistic appearance. Have you seen any that fit this description?

4 different genera popped into my mind that are sometimes referred to as "leaf turtles". Cyclemys dentata darkens with age, and can be almost totally black. The others are rarely as dark.

I haven't seen many C. dentata, and it could be some kind of morph. More than likely, it is just some local variation in color. People are always trying to put some kind of "brand name" on unusually colored herps.

Sometimes, the price of the animal can give you an idea if it's a rare species or a true genetic morph. Of course, you have to be careful with that also...I saw a rather common looking box turtle on sale for $3,000 once. It must have laid golden eggs.

Ken, I remember that box turtle you were speaking of, if we are talking about the same one, awhile ago on the Kingsnake classifieds. I actually contacted the dealer and told them they might get $65 for what they actually had.

Bingo, that's the one! How 'bout that, huh? Not only did the ad get pulled super fast, but I don't think I've seen that seller since. I mean, it was pretty, but c'mon!

I recently acquired an adult Black Asian Leaf Turtle and he is all black with strongly serrated rear scutes. His head is strikingly black with large black eyes. I believe he is a Siebenrockiella crassicollis as described in this link... http://www.turtlepuddle.org/exotics/crassicollis.html

I'll try to post a picture of him when I get my camera back...
