breeding size advice

stevep Nov 25, 2006 01:45 PM

They are two years old and a little over 700 grams each. Are they large enough to breed next spring(07)?? Here's a picture from last year.
Thanks
Steve

I have been wondering the same thing. I was wondering if anyone knows at what weight females and males can be bred at. I have a couple females that are 2 yrs old and about 450g. Just wondering if I should hold off for another year?

Thanks,

Chris

Speaking from experience, I would definately wait a year or so. I had a female banded that was nearly four years old that I bred this year. She was healthy and had good weight on her. In april/may of this year she laid two infertile eggs and became egg bound and died. Speaking with the experts in the field, I was informed that she was probably not big enough. A huge mistake on my part, but if someone can learn something from it...

Thanks for the response Jeff. I'll take your advice! Don't want to mess up too bad by getting in a hurry.
