Philippines Elaphe

Hey everyone,

I recently took a trip to the Philippines and saw this snake. The location; Puerto Princesa, Palawan... about 1km into a cave... Sorry about the terrible photo but I was in a boat and all I had to help the camera focus was a flashlight... possible food sources seen on location... brackish fish and bats... any help identifying would be awesome!

a new genus Coelognathus. There are a number of subspecies from the philipines for Coelognathus erythrurus. This new genus also includes the radiated and subradiated ratsnakes, the indian trinket snake and a few less known "ratsnakes" like flavolineatus
Nice field shot.
Best regards
John

Thanks John!

Man, I find virtually nothing in the way of photos for this species and other similar subscpecies on the net... Thank you very much for the compliments on the photography, seeing the lack of photos for this group, it may be a more important photo that I had originally thought...

Ben:
I had a chance to look at Schulz's article on erythrurus in his Monograph. The subspecies on Palawan is now called philippinus. He has a few photos and sketches that match very nicely with your photo. The food for erythrurus is listed as rodents, birds and lizards with possibly frogs for juveniles.

Best regards
John

Excellent, thanks for posting the pic. Any other herps from the PI? I'd love to see them.
