Does my White's have mites?!

sporkytuun Dec 04, 2006 06:43 PM

I'm kind of a beginner when it comes to frogs, so bare with me...
I just got a White's tree frog and a Tomato Frog. I have them housed in the same terrarium. The tomato frog is very active, but recently the white's has spent all of his time - awake and asleep - in the water bowl. Their habitat is plenty humid, if not, maybe too humid... and the temperature is just above room temp. Then, I just noticed these little creme colored bugs... they are just about the same size and shape as snake mites, about twice as big as the period at the end of this sentence. Is this why my White's is soaking? If so, how do I get rid of them?
Thanks

you shouldn't keep the tank too humid, keep it fairly dry if you have a water dish. i've found taht too, if it's very humid they spend a lot of time in the water dish. what color are the bugs? if they are white they could be springtails, they appear in tanks that are very humid because when the frogs poop or if you have wet wood it's easier for them to decompose. i would not keep it so humid and just see what happens. where are the bugs located? a lot of the times mites are by their eyes. can you see them moving and is there a lot of them? keep me posted.

isolate your white's from your tomato ASAP just in case and see if the mites are on the frog or in the tank. White's and tomatoes like different humidities so it might be a good idea to keep them seporate. My whites tend to spend a few days at a time in their pond, but never sleep in there. Good luck
