what kind of water

rhyion Dec 11, 2006 10:13 PM

My roomate got a water snake suposedly being a florida banded. It doesn't really look like one though. Its about 17 inches long, a male i think, from quick glance looks solid brown, but closer inspection lets you see that there are some faint bands. Around the mouth is orange/reddish, and the belly is plain yellow/ornage with no markings. I was thinking maybe a redbelly or plainbelly but I'm not sure. I'll try to get a picture up eventually. Any other ideas for what it might be?

thanks

Could easily be a FL Water. I have collected or seen thousands of these and they can be VERY variable. As to the belly pattern note the pic I posted above (and here) who is also lacking belly pattern.

Look forward to seeing pics.

I have concluded it is a redbelly water snake. Its got a plain belly, red at the mouth and more orangy for the rest of the belly. The pattern looks definetly similar to that of of of the subspecies of "nerodia erogaster" or whatever it is called, basically some sort of plainbelly water snake.

What exactly is a florida water snake? Is that the same as a florida banded?

Anywhom, in either case, how big would an adult male get, maybe 30 inches or so? And about how long does it take for a male to reach full size in captivity. I was thinking about 1.5 years or so, that soound about right?

thanks
