Euthanasing Cane Toads?

Tuttley Dec 13, 2006 06:59 AM

Hope this is appropriate for this forum, please advise nicely if not.

I have recently moved to SE QLD (Australia) and hoping someone could explain to me the most humane method of euthanasing some of the dozens of cane toads that can be found around our front steps each night.

They are a feral pest, in plague proportions, but I don't want to be cruel.

Thanks.

I truly do not believe that Australia will ever overcome their cane toad problem. I have heard in the past that if you as a resident of Australia capture cane toads and call the proper authorities they will be glad to take them and "dispose" of them in whatever manner they see fit. I watched this show on Animal Planet with these invaded frogs on some island somewhere, and the residents filled spray bottles with bleach and went around squirting the frogs. On that same show they showed pesticide applicators applying this super concentrated caffeine spray to plants which also killed the frogs. With such large numbers of toads to get rid of, being "humane" really isn't plausible. Shotguns, large rocks, the freezer, a knife, those are some of the methods I would employ.
