Passed Up a Redfoot this Weekend

KevinM Dec 18, 2006 10:17 AM

I went to a small herp show this past weekend and past up a good buy on a baby redfooted tort. About $20-25 cheaper than seen on Kingsnake.com, and no shipping. It was the vendors last one. It was very small, definitely hatchling sized. However, instead of the usual darkish shell with lighter centers, the entire shell appeared to be a lighter brownish color. Is this normal coloration? The head and legs had the orange/red spotting and in general the little guy looked OK, albeit a bit cool. Could it have been a yellowfoot mistakenly sold as a redfoot??

Probably a redfoot. They are highly variable depending on where the parents are from and what their colors are. But the hatchlings can be light brown without the well defined carapace spots.
Yellowfoot hatchlings are very distinctive as they have tooth like projections on the front of their carapace. This is where the name denticulata comes from.
