Enclosure questions.

BD_Novice Dec 22, 2006 03:18 AM

I'm doing research before purchasing a young CWD. I have several questions that have probably been discussed before; however, I'd appreciate any thoughts you might have.

I'd probably purchase a WD that's about 5-6". How long do you think I could house it in a 20L tank (30x12x12)?

Do you think reptariums are viable options? I read somewhere that you can use the soft tray cage liners to cover the sides to keep the humidity in. If it's a possibilty, I would move the dragon into a 260 gal. reptarium (tall) after he out grew the 20L.

Where do the reptariums open up?

Thanks for helping out a newbie.

M.

CWD are arboreal and prefer height over width. Since they attain maximum size at approximately 24-30 months don't waste your money on a small enclosure. Whatever enclosure you choose will need moisture cycles mixed with a dry-out period to keep down the growth of harmful bacteria and fungus. If you use a ultrasonic humidifier with your set-up and don't mind filling it daily, you can use a reptarium or build a hardware cloth enclosure. High humidity levels are a must for these guys, as is a fairly significant amount of clean water. They require a temperature gradient (either top to bottom or side to side) and ambient air temps from 70-75 to 84-88. 1 basking spot for each CWD of 90-94F is also a necessity. Your dragon can become stunted if housed in an inadequate environment. Start with a 75 gallon tank minimum. If you end up with a smaller female she can stay in it.

Thanks, Diane, for your reply and insight.

I have a few more questions, if you don't mind. I did a search on "ultrasonic" humidifier. All I really came up with is a humidifier at Walmart made by Sunbeam. It's designed more for a kid's room than a vivarium. Did you have a specific product in mind. If so, are you able to provide a link? Are regular humidifier/misters for reptiles appropriate? What about foggers?

Should I just start out with the 260 gallon reptarium? I've never really seen one assembled and don't know how many points of access there are and where they are. Are there openings for cords or tubes?

Thanks again for your expert advice.

Mark

Wow! beautiful vivarium, Diane. If I had one like that, I might keep it in the living room too.
