Paddle Tail Newt Question!

reptiqueen Jan 03, 2007 06:52 PM

I got two paddle tail and i think the water might be too deep. I got a 29 gal and filled it a little more then half way. Is that too deep? they are hanging on the plant and they go to the bottom but it seems they have trouble making it back to the top. I really confused cause 1 care sheet say alot of water and another will say 4 to 5 in deep

I also have 2 baby fire bellies and they never seem to go in the water?

When I had a fire belly, it never seemed to go in the water either, although it might have been because I was keeping it with a rough skinned newt (because the pet store said it was okay. Now I know better than that).

If you purchased the firebellies through a pet store, they are probably Cynops orientalis (see http://www.caudata.org/cc/articles/firebelly.shtml )

As an adult this is a small species that is often mistaken for an immature newt. See http://www.caudata.org/cc/species/Cynops/C_orientalis.shtml for good instructions.

If the temperature is correct and the water conditions are fine (ammonia is 0, nitrite is 0 and nitrate is less than 60 ppm) then the tank can be filled as deep as you want.
