skin peeling help

I have an approximately 8-10 soft shell, the shell is peeling (mostly on the shell) some underneath him. Is he just growing? I have also noticed some dark areas under him on the bottom, almost as if he had lung cancer or something. Any ideas? I've searched the internet and several books and nothing specific on it has come up.
