my spread in korea

nydon Jan 08, 2007 06:18 AM

a while back one of the guys asked me for some pics of my place over here in korea as well as some pics of habitat. I have been so busy lately i have not had a chance to visit the forum. Finally got a breather so figured i would drop by for a bit. I have thousands of pics but i do not have them organized/cataloged very well. As a result i can never find what i am looking for but did locate a few pics of my spread. The first pic shows my house on the right and my reptile building on the left. My land sets up on the right edge of a draw. All of the hills behind me are wooded (hardwood with some softwood plots mixed in). I look down over the valley that consists mainly of rice patties and farm land as well as 4 small old style farm houses. The second pic shows the reptile building in the middle of construction as well as the small 2 bedroom house that was there when i bought the land (which we tore down and built a 6 bedroom place). The last pic is some of my garden area that i use to grow veggies for my herps and feeder insects. You can see some of the rice fields down below.

I get a number of snakes and lizards sunning themselves on my place (more Gloydius than anything). I have some pics of a snake that i found on my place that i will try to post soon in the hopes someone can positively ID it. Gonna run now and read some of the threads I have missed. I see dinodon has put up some awesome pics.

Dinodon - I have a major project i am working on over here and do not know how much time i will have to do the tv shows that i normally do (I usually make 2-3 trips per year to various countries to film). I am impressed with your pics and would like to discuss the possibility of doing a series there. Let me know if this is a possibility and if so i will get with you prior to meeting with the producers.

Thanks, Don

Don:
What a great place you have!!! And that reptile building is enough to make any snake guy green with envy. The trees look very much like the deciduous woods of the eastern US.

Keep in touch

John, yes, the landscape is very much like upstate NY where I grew up. My place has lots of chestnut (i pick up enough chestnuts in the fall to last me the whole year). Also a lot of oaks. No maples so the fall colors are not quite as pretty as NY fall season but otherwise very similiar.

I will get some picks posted of my setups when i get some time. Mostly I have rack systems except for my boids and monitors. I keep my torts outside in the summer. I will also get some pics of some of the habitat.

Thanks,
Don

Great looking pics, Don. That's a nice place in the country and you sure have some big digs. Boy, that herp bldg must hold a lot. I bet you see some cool stuff. I don't mind seeing all the dione you can find and those mamushis are nice too. We just get Eastern massasaugas where I live.

Thought I'd throw in a couple pics from our Northern Michigan hobby farm....
This is one of the new fields we created for prairie habitat...

This is one of our ponds in summer, after cutting back growth in winter...

Here's a view of the Santa Rita Mtns in Arizona, a few miles from our AZ home, where we'll be retiring in two more years...

This is a green ratsnake I caught in the Santa Ritas last summer...

Dang, this is great fun. Keep it up guys!

nice pics terry. thanks. You ought to have a blast herping arizona. I spent several years in texas and it was a lot different herping there than the northeast where i grew up. I found all kinds of great stuff including an indigo (in my back yard no less). I always looked forward to the trip to west texas every year to do some herping with some of the "old timers". Of course we went for the elusive alterna but always found a huge assortment of stuff that always softened the disappointment of not finding a grayband. And the side trip down to mexico to throw back some margaritas always helped too.

Thanks,
Don

Sorry so late on this one, Don, and thanks.

That West TX trip sounds great. I've been wanting to go there for years. We'll be making our first trip in 2008. I hope to find graybands too, but I know that's a long shot. Fortunately, I love working with Emory's rats. I very much want to see some from the Big Bend area. Last summer, a friend and I herped the Gulf Coast of TX. We had a blast and found a few ratsnakes too. We plan to go again next summer.

Can't wait to retire. Later...TC

Very nice looking place Don! I'd love to herp there. It'd be cool to see the unIDed snake......who knows, it may be a new species for the ROK! Any salamanders or newts in that stream or in the paddies?
