Feeding Eastern Garter

I just caught a young Eastern Garter and have it in a 10gal vivarium.

When I feed him (earthworms) should I drop it into the 10gal and let him find it on his own or should they both go into something smaller so its easeir for him to find?

Probably best to put the snake and food into a smaller container.
