Ball Python TEMPS help!

infamous_mobb93 Oct 09, 2006 01:10 AM

I have a hatchling ball and my temperatures are 78-85 on the cool side and between 89-91 for the basking area. I only use one heat lamp to do this because my house stays pretty warm all year round. I heard that this isnt good or something and that I should use a Under tank heater to provide belly heat in the basking spot. But 89-91 is the surface temperature in my enclosure,i use a temp gun to get this reading and a digital thermometor with a probe. is this ok?

The actual temps are fine but the problem with basking lights is ball pythons don't come out to bask. Also you can't leave the light on all the time to maintain the temperature during the night. Under tank heats are better for this as they produce no visible light, just heat. Unless you use something like a ceramic heat emitter or a bulb that produces little to no light visible to your snake, the UTH is the best way to go.

Basking lights are a terrible heat for ball pythons as they are burrowing animals and would not benefit from an overhead heat source at all.
89-91 is also too cold for a warm spot.
You need to pick up an under tank heater and get those temps up to 92-95.
Good luck.
