Gecko Normal behaviour?!?

dlowbridge85 Aug 20, 2006 05:59 AM

Okay, so I have two new females Leos... About 4-5 months old. One was a duller colour and was told it was abou to shed its skin. Both seemed very active in the petshop yesturday. Beautiful creatures but I'm rather inexperienced in knowing their normal behaviour. It isn't what I've seen in the pet shops or on the telly. Basically got them home yesturday and set up the tank while keeping them warm. It took me about 1 hour from shop to putting them into their new habitiat. So when I introduced them into the habitat they ran around for about an hour. Then after about an hour one went into a hide, and the other one continued for another half an hour before retreating into its hide. But last night I saw little movement to either, though the bigger obviously moved as it has shed its skinned and now resides in the mist box. I know they are nocturnal creatures but I saw them almost do marathons during the day yesturday in the pet shop.

I decided to feed them this morning as I was told that they wouldn't have been fed properly yesturday. So putting in a small number of crickets (all dusted and only one made an attempt for escape) I placed them in. But neither are hunting for anything like I saw one do in the pet shop. They are eating, but only when a suicidal cricket walks into its mouth.

Is this normal? Should I be worried? And does anyone know how they naturally get calcium in the wild? No-one can tell me.

hi

it may just be the case that your new geckos will take a while to settle. My gecko goes through spells of being quite active for a few days and then for the next few days she will spend a lot of time in her hide. She is normally a bit quiter when she is coming up to shed.

As for the hunting, geckos will stalk crickets but more often then not they are lazy hunters and will not stalk something until it is like 1cm away from its mouth!!!

All there is to suggest it check temps and humdiity, which I am sure will be fine.
I also dust my crickets with a gecko formula to keep them healthy. Geckos may get their calcuim in the wild from licking sand as where they come from they live on rocky outcrops, mixed with soil and sand.
