Superworms or Mealworms?

raingerjoe Jan 09, 2007 09:36 AM

Are superworms a good substitute for mealworms & crickets?? For a Yearling red tegu about 17-18" inches long..
They're just a lot easier to keep....plus i already offer Lean supplemented ground turkey once a week, a fuzzy mouse once a week & supplemented tegu diet once a week, with veggies and fruits on the side....(never has eaten veggies or fruits)...

Thanks in advance..............

what is suppplemented tegu diet? they are good instead of mealworms but i would still feed crickets. superworm exoskeleton is a little harder so sometimes they dont digest them completely. atleast thats what i have noticed. i keep superworms for my tegu also. you wrote that you feed him a mouse once a week, tegu diet once a week, and turkey once a week. what do you feed the rest of the days? keep offering fruits/veggies even if he doesnt eat it. try mixing the fruits and veggies with some scrambled eggs.

It's called, Tegu & Monitor Food by Zoo Med, and it's basically chicken/soybean base. I personally supplement it by sprinkeling some MinerAll to add calcium and vitamins.

I also offer him live dusted crickets about 2 to 3 times weekly and some scrambled egg about once a week as a treat.
He also usually takes a day off every week and decides to stay burried in the substrate, so i do not offer any food that day.
I will definitely try to mix the veggies in from now on. (Thanks for the tip!!)

The truth is, I getting tired of keeping crickets and thats why i would like to switch to superworms, they're much easier and cleaner.

Thanks,

Jose...

My tegu eats superworms at least twice a week without problems.I have both super and mealworms. But I only use the mealworms for my small prairie skink and my ferrets. The Tegu eats superworms, fish and ratpups/mice for his protein, with the occasional cooked chicken cubes(which he loves)..I also of course give him lots of fruits and vegies..I dont feed mine raw poultry at all.I dont want to introduce salmonella and the risks are higher then ever with raw chicken and turkey..

some chicken and cube it.I feed my tegu cubed chicken once in awhile with his mango and greens. He loves it.But he loves anything.I do use dogfood chunks in a pinch but only rarely..I also pressurecook a chicken with the giblets. Then I blend it in a blender with the soft small bones included using the liquid to make it blend better.Freeze it in cubes and defrost when needed.I use this mix on his greens if hes being picky kinda high in fat so i use it sparingly.I mostly use it for my ferrets.
For veges and fruits I use frozen/thawed mango and mixed berries and blueberrys and whatever greens are available.Like collards or romaine or mixed field greens in a bag, fresh greenbeans or frozen/thawed ones..I also give him fruit that is overripe that we wouldnt really eat like pears and banana. He also loves kiwi fruits. And he likes applesauce but i dont use it often.
I tried frozen mixed veges but Inoticed he pooped the corn ond lima beans out undigested so I quit using them..

Thank you for the tips,

I'll try to offer a wider variety of fruits, greens, and veggies, to see what he likes.....

Thanks,

Jose...
