Breeding mountain horned???....

-ryan- Jan 10, 2007 07:20 PM

Can some one point me in the direction of some good info on breeding mountain horned dragons. I am keeping myself busy by coming up with very small breeding projects. I've got a group of russian torts I'm working with, I'm going to try to find a female pastel ball python for my male this summer, but I'm also really interested in doing something with lizards.

Mountain horned dragons have always caught my eye because they stay relatively small, are very attractive, and I find that there isn't a whole lot of captive breeding going on right now (is this from lack of interest or difficulty in breeding?).

Any good info you can tell me is also appreciated. What are the pitfalls common in breeding this species? What kind of nesting materials do they prefer? Should they be separated when not breeding? Just a few thoughts that I haven't found surfing the web yet.

My other idea for a breeding project is yellow ackies, but that's something I've been debating doing for the past 2 years.

I've kept a variety of reptiles and done a lot of research on my own (aka: not just reading, but trying new things and seeing how it goes). I have a pretty good grasp on reptile husbandry, but breeding anything is new to me. I think wanting to breed reptiles is the natural progression from just keeping them (there are so many more behaviors to observe when you keep groups of anything).

Thanks in advance for any info you can give me, or any good leads to some websites.

If you think breeding MHD's might be a little too difficult for someone who's a novice at breeding, don't hesitate to let me know (but be gentle ). I would still love to keep a single one to work with if breeding seems out of the question.

Ryan,
I don't think that breeding MHDs is too difficult for a beginning MHD keeper. But I won't give info here. Check out Froggieb.com. If you have any questions that that site doesn't answer, we'll go from there. It wouldn't be wise for me to go spelling everything out for you when you will find excellent info there. If you need anything else, just ask!

Evan

That's all I needed was a push in the right direction. I'll read the website thoroughly and then if I have any questions I'll come back.

Great name! And I wish I could have given you that "push".

Oh well, Evan beat me to it (darn you Evan)

There is a great deal of information right on this forum. Starting with Froggie B's website is a great idea but also search this site and start reading. I think about every question about breeding and incubation have been asked and answered here.

My first clutch was from an already gravid wild caught dragon. With Marcia's help I was able to get them hatched. I made mistakes and lost a couple eggs and babies but I found it very rewarding and have continued to breed.
