Surinam Toads won't eat...

rotarymagic Jan 16, 2007 08:12 PM

I've had my 1.1 breeding pair for 5 days now and neither will eat. I've tried mollies, swordtails, rosy reds, crickets, and night crawlers.. The female tried taking a nightcrawler once and then spit it out. What is going on? My water temp is 74-75 degrees fahrenheit. No lighting on them yet(still trying to find out an opinion on what to use.) They're in a 20L with overkill filtration with calm areas, water level is about 10 inches. I used dechlorinated tap(reptisafe) and a product called cycle to speed up the biological filter on my filtration sytem. The tank is bare for the most part, but I am looking into the finest grade pool filter sand. Is dropping a nightcrawler in front of their face and between their arms not the right way to feed them? Thanks in advance.

My little guy did not eat for about 2 weeks, then i waved a silverside in fron of his face at night and he gulped it down!

I also noticed that the male in the group has some thick hips but a skinnier stomach... Is this bloat or what? The frog doesn't have bouyancy problems, but seems kinda like he's hunched over. The female is flat, but completely filled out. Is the male just not eating yet and still stressed?

Well how is your setup. Is there a place where the frogs can get away from current! I would try earthworms, my frogs go crazy for them. They gulp them down from my hand! Good luck

My Surinam Toads are excellent eaters. However, that was not always the case. When I first obtained them as young frogs, they would not eat anything I offered - night crawlers, rosy reds, pellet food, etc. Nothing worked for 3 weeks. Be persistant, new frogs take time to adjust. Then one day I fed them and they haven't stopped yet I feed 12 rosy reds per frog per week. I just put the fish in the tank and the frog eats whenever he wants to.

Cool, how long have you had your Pipa Pipa Frogs and what kind of setup do you have for them? Do you leave the feeders in all the time?
