File Snake Shedding

Serpent_nirvana Jan 18, 2007 03:35 PM

Howdy,

I have a question for the experienced file snake keepers out there: how long does it typically take these guys to shed? (Adult snakes, not babies.) I acquired two of these over a month ago, and one looked as though it may have been going opaque when I first got it. It hasn't shed yet, and the other one is now starting to look the same way. Any suggestions?

Thanks!

I would say that the average for me has been about every 40-45 days. But, that said, I have one now that shed and then shed less than 30 days later. My first A. arafurae was so stressed when it arrived that it went into shed, but never did. Then went into shed ~40days later and finally shed. I've seen terrestrial snakes do this from stress on rare occassion.

My advice right now is not to worry about it. Spend Your energy making sure the parameters are correct and the snake will shed very soon or after it goes into shed the next time....

Thanks for the reply! I actually just now went into my snake room and to my incredible surprise, the one that most recently went into shed (which I had thought was doing pretty poorly, unfortunately) had shed out, and she's starting to look a lot better! I'm a bit concerned about the other one, though -- she looks fairly healthy, but she's looked "opaque" for over the almost two months that I've had her. I hope she also sheds soon...

Her eyes should turn blue and then clear up just like any other snake, and then she should shed.

Are they eating? Or have they been?

Which species?
