Very nice. Whats his straightline measurement and weight now?
well, when i took pics last srpring he was a little over 16 inch shell length. im guessing hes probably around 17-17.5 shell length now. next time i have a friend over i'll have to measure him. i have no idea about weight. id say around 20 pounds!?!? i never weighed him though so dont know for sure. i could be way off. lol
Awesome turtle and great stock tank. What do you have on the bottom of your stock tank?
i dont have any substrate on the bottom of the stock tank. there are a few bricks on one side of the tank to hide the pump and heater.
nice turtles from down below!!!!
my 12'' common is 16 pounds, I bet that guys closer to 30.
Whats that white line on the inside and outside of the stock tank?
yeah he probably is more. told you i was bad at guessing weights! lol the white line huh? well i was so excited to get that stock tank, only problem was that it wouldnt fit down the stairs to the basement. the corner was to tight. i had to use a saws all to cut the top half off. i siliconed (and for some dumb reason didnt use clear) the top back on once it was down to prevent leaks and to add extra height so the turtle couldnt climb out. i think if he wanted to he could get out though. i dont fill the water up to the line either. usually just leave it right below. i think that my water is about 20 inches deep or close to that.
very nice man... i just aquired a hypomelanastic ally and a pig tailed ally and a common ally. a situation that presented itself and i knew that it was a once in a life time opportunity your snapper looks really good. how old is he/she? mine are only about two and a half months old and eating a combination of guppies and earthworms with an occasional cricket or two. any information relating to any possible problems that you had would be helpful i want to provide my snappers with everything that they need i was wondering if you could tell me how long it takes for the allys shell to harden up. any input would be greatly appreciated thanks.
you seem to be off to a great start. the challenge for many is to getem started. over feeding can be another. as for a their shell hardening. i've visited turtle trappers that had 15-16" shells with still their wood like textor. so it may vary. phantoms snapper looks like its beginning to occifie(harded up) and its what 7 yrs old. good luck with yours, their almost bulletproof.
my turtle will be 7 yrs old around now, or i can go by purchase date of may 2000. he came to the store in march of 2000 a little smaller then a 50 cent piece. so he could have been a couple months old already. i never had any problems with him. i think he got tapeworms from goldfish that i had mainly been feeding him when he made the jump up from rosie reds. i treated that and stopped feeding him goldfish and he never had any probs sense. when i actually bought him his very tip of the tail had been nipped by another similar size ally. after a few days at home it looked like it was getting white (fungus or something) so i treated him with some fish med directly on the tail and it preventing it from spreading and eventually just dried the tip up and it fell off. you can see by the pics i have on here that it wasnt much. if you are houseing yours together, you might want to seperate them. also, when he was about 3 i put him in a crate to clean out his tank. well i have bene doing that for 3 yrs but i guess he was getting to large for the crate because he was able to snap at it (was made of hard plastic) and he broke the tip off from his upper jaw/beak. thats grown back fine too. those have been the only medical probs i ever had with him. when he was small he ate a lot of fish, small rodents, worms, crickets, mealworms, and reptomin. as he got larger he ate the same things just larger sizes. also added trout chow. nto he mainly eats fish and thawed out rodents. although recently i have been getting him frog legs from the seafood place which he loves. also eats crayfish.
again sorry for my spelling errors
