Southern Painted

terryo Jan 29, 2007 04:25 PM

Someone wants to give me a Southern Painted hatchling. I am putting an outdoor pond in my yard this summer. I just wanted to know if (when it gets older of course) its ok to put it outside with red ear sliders. I live in NY and the winters will be cold here. Thanks.

Should be fine. Either way it's going to hibernate when it gets cold. The only thing you might look out for is when you put the SP with the REL to watch for aggression. Some turtles will react to others if they're not around the same size. But it should be OK since there will be a plenty of space for each.

I would keep the Southern indoors until it got bigger. I wouldnt want a hatchling in an outdoor pond, especially over winter, when its not in its natural region in the US.

Currently in the US Navy so I have sold off my collection. But over the years I have had dozens of turtles, fish, geckos, and other lizards. Cant wait to get back in the hobby once im out though!
